I spent some time on Thursday thinking about "good enough" interview questions for IRB. I will need to come up with questions for my interviews with parents and a separate set for my interviews with teachers. Here's what I would like to ask parents about:
Why did you decide to become a classroom volunteer?
When, how often, and for how long do you usually volunteer?
How did you first find out about volunteer opportunities?
How do you feel about volunteering?
What would you say your goals and expectations are for the volunteer experience?
Please describe your ideal classroom volunteer experience.
How closely do your actual experiences align with this ideal?
How would you characterize your interactions with the teacher?
Do you feel valued and appreciated by the teacher? Why or why not?
Would you describe this relationship as cooperative? Why or why not?
What personal qualities do you hope to find in your child's teacher, specifically in his or her interactions with parents?
What do you expect from the teacher when you visit the classroom? Before you arrive? After you leave?
What should the teacher reasonably be able to expect of you?
In your opinion, are those expectations being met?
How do your experiences this school year differ from any previous classroom volunteering experiences? To what do you attribute the difference?

I think you are off to a very strong start Alissa. The questions are direct and open ended. I wonder if you are at all interested in the dynamic between parent and child while the parent is volunteering? I am not quiet sure how to word what I am thinking exactly-or if it aligns with your question. I am wondering if a teacher feels that a parent takes over with their child when in the class or if a teacher feels they must treat that parent's child differently when in their presence (intimidation?) Maybe when you begin to write out your questions to teachers you will decide if that is even something you are curious about? I really am excited to hear about your research and wish you luck during this intense process-I will pass on any relevant research I come across. Also, my CT last semester had a parent volunteer daily to do centers, I'd be happy to introduce you or question her for you :) (My mother also volunteered often in class when I was in elementary school if you want to email/call her.)
