Evolution Stage 2...a changing idea leads to a different question...

Amidst huge technological difficulties in not being able to use the Internet at home and at my local library and subsequently being unable to grab my articles to read and review...I took a good hard look at my question and found that I was looking at Family Literacy Events as more of a global not local approach.  I think this made my question too huge and not necessarily meaningful for me as a teacher researcher.  Focusing on what needs to be improved first seemed to be more logical than how to change it.  In my original question I did not even say what needed to be changed...duh!  I also feel that focusing on parents learning to teach the kids was not benefiting the students directly...my new question will still involve parents, but focus on the implications of encouraging and structuring time for independent reading...looking at student book choice, motivation, and skill development and the social emotional and academic learning taking place.  What social emotional and academic learning implications/opportunities are there for students who are encouraged to practice independent reading? I don't know...let's go find out...

  1. Hi David,

I think it's great that you've started to reevaluate your question so that it is more meaningful both to you and to your students.

I do have an observation: as it stands now, your question doesn't mention parents or the home. Are you really asking what happens to those students when they're encouraged by their parents to practice independent reading at home? Or have you intentionally broadened the focus to include reading at school and encouragement from all sources?

    1. Hi Alissa,
After meeting with Michelle last week I reflected a great deal about my project. I don't feel I was focusing enough on my teaching with my students. I have decided to use my class (possibly my grade level) to research instead of the entire school population. I will save that project for a later time. I am purposefully leaving the parent literacy event off the main question to concentrate on the idea of independent reading...based on academic and social emotional learning for students. One task or activity to get there with research and data collection will be to hold parent literacy events in my classroom and conduct interviews and surveys to see of students are motivated in positive or negative ways. Basically I am trying to narrow the question, but maintain the idea through the research of my students and their families based on the curricular area of reading independently....encouraging all sources. I hope that answers your question...let me know. Thank you for all your help...I appreciate it! David
