After reading H&P, I feel like the latest version of my
research question is acceptable (How does incorporating literacy into my
science classroom help students?) because it is based on a need I identified in
the classroom. Besides being mandated to
utilize the new Common Core literacy standards, I also feel like it is
addressing a deficit in the classroom I have not yet remedied. Therefore, I feel like the research comes
from the right place which is an important place to begin.
However, I
know from the five articles I used for my Lit. Review, that finding other
quality articles is the hardest part. I
need to get smart like Sheridan and Alissa both mentioned about learning how to
skim better, I need to find a system about searching (such as writing down the
keywords that I use and how fruitful they were) and collecting (re-launching
Refworks for myself), sorting (skimming, reading the abstracts like Ivy said
and taking notes), and then hopefully finding enough useful, thought-provoking
juicy nuggets of knowledge that I found the process worthwhile (the ultimate
goal).
Of all the
research I have read so far, Lauren Veen’s MA project and one article about
writing research reports have been the most salient. I have found myself talking with others about
these findings and thinking about how to change my teaching to best re-create
those situations. I hope all of my
research is like that.
Hi Emily, you are one step ahead of me. I'm glad that last semester's project worked out for you. I'm at square one. Even my research skills are at square one. I was spoiled by the articles that Libby gave us lol and Patty's help. Thank you for the tips: skim, sort, and discuss with classmates.
