Blog 2

At this point in my research I am seriously committed to my question, I am in the process of searching for articles and other MA projects that will help me. This weekend I read an MA paper which investigated the question: what happens to English language learners' reading comprehension when they engage in small group discussions before, during and after reading? This paper was related to my questions because it studied student interactions which I also am looking into. This study was done in a fourth grade classroom. I am having trouble finding research involving lower grades and book clubs. Most research that I have found deals with upper grades, middle school and high school. This makes me nervous because it has crossed my mind that second graders might not be old enough to handle book clubs. I will continue to research about book clubs in all grade levels and other practices in literacy for second grade students. The MA project I read found that small group discussions increased the participants reading comprehension. I am looking to increase reading enjoyment among different groups, ELL's male students and students who are not reading at grade level.

  1. Your question sounds solid and very interesting. I think that you can still uses the research you find for upper grades and correlate to your work. Try searching the elements of books clubs in specific articles such as the element of discussion and positive effects on reading attitudes.

  2. Yes, I think Vanessa gives some great advice. Your lit review doesn't have to have THE answer. Take what you've learned from those studies. Your study is poised super well to fill in the gap of younger readers.
